How to Build an Items Collection Website and Generate Revenue in the Process

Have you ever wanted to keep track of a particular collection of yours? Perhaps you’re like me and you enjoy collecting amiibo, as you can see on David’s Things — which just happens to be my newest project, aside from Di Franco University, obviously.

David’s Things is what many would call an Amazon affiliate website. In other words, it’s an online shop that is completely powered by WordPress and Amazon that allows you to keep a percentage of the revenue earned from products sold.

While WordPress isn’t necessary to build a site like David’s Things, I do find it to be the most affordable (it’s free!) and flexible solution available.

So, how does this work? The process is fairly straightforward and actually a great learning experience.

Choose a reliable web host

The first thing you will want to do is choose a web host that you’re comfortable with. Pricing is also an important factor, especially if you are just getting started. For these two reasons alone, I recommend going with Bluehost.

I should mention as a disclaimer that I am a Bluehost affiliate, but I only promote services that I use myself — and this is no exception. Bluehost has been great to me. They offer one-click WordPress installation, pricing is fair and hosting (most important) is reliable.

Provided you do go the Bluehost route, please consider using my affiliate link. Doing so helps support my content, including this very website.

Install WordPress

Once you are signed up with a web host, it’s time to install WordPress. This may seem intimidating at first, but I promise it’s very simple. Provided you chose Bluehost as your web host, you can use the one-click installation in the ‘Applications’ view.

If your web host does not include the option of an easy install, you can view alternative setup instructions here.

Find the required theme and plugins

In order for an affiliate site to work, you must find a WordPress theme and several plugins that are built specifically with Amazon in mind. I recommend giving WooZone a try, as this makes building your site quite painless.

David’s Things is powered by WooZone, which is an Amazon Associates bundle pack that includes everything you need to get started: three plugins and a premium affiliates theme

Currently selling for $66, WooZone is more than worth it. The cost may seem high, but because it’s a one-time purchase, this means that you can use it with any future projects that require Amazon affiliate plugins.

And finally, be sure to download WooCommerce. It’s a free plugin that is required in order for WooZone to function properly. It’s not necessarily something you will use as often as WooZone, but it doesn’t hurt to have it accessible at any moment.

Start building

Now this is where the fun part begins. It’s time to build your website. At first, you may feel overwhelmed, but look at this as a step-by-step process. I’m telling you, WooZone makes the experience so much easier than it should be.

Provided you need help along the way, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. You can also view the official support page here, which can help with a variety of concerns.

Once your website is live, feel free to show it to me and I’ll give you a free plug on social media. After all, you’re going to need some quality traffic to get you started.

Good luck!
