Create and Host a WordPress Website in 13 Easy Steps

You've been telling yourself for a while now that you need to create a website. However, you can never seem to find the time. I've got good news for you. Creating a website nowadays is the simplest (and quickest) it's ever been. It also makes for a great learning experience.

There are multiple ways of going about building a website, but to keep things simple, I am going to walk you through a 13-step guide that focuses on setting up WordPress via Bluehost —a popular web hosting service. 13 steps may seem like a lot to go through, but I can assure you, they're quick and painless.

Oh, and the best part? It's very affordable. After all, I'm here to save you time and money. Let's get started!

Step 1: Find a web host.

The first thing you need to decide on is a web host. You'll want to go with a hosting company that is reliable and overall not too expensive. Bluehost, my preferred hosting solution when building WordPress websites, offers both. Actually, they offer more than you'll likely ever need.

Step 2:  Select a plan.

Provided you decide to go with Bluehost as your web host, you'll be presented with three hosting tiers: Basic, Plus, and Prime

Bluehost is going to recommend a specific tier, but the choice is completely up to you. If you're not expecting a lot of traffic, then I suggest going with the lowest tier. You can always upgrade at a later date.

Step 3: Find a domain.

Deciding on a domain name can be tough. Believe me, I've been there — several times. Try to set some time aside and find one that you feel fits your website best.

If you already have one ready to go, that's even better. Simply follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 4: Set up your account information.

This part of the process is self explanatory. Fill in all the required fields with your account information. You will also be asked to customize your account plan.

Step 5: Set up your payment information.

Just like the previous step, this part is self explanatory. Fill in your payment information, agree to the usual Terms of Service, and click the 'Submit' button.

Step 6: Think of a secure password.

Before your account creation is complete, you'll need to decide on a password. Be sure to choose one that is secure and something only you will remember.

Step 7: Finalize your password.

Once you decide on a password, fill in the required form. And of course, don't forget to agree to the terms.

Step 8: Log in to your new account.

Congratulations! Your Bluehost account is ready to go. Now let's move onto the fun stuff.

9 Pick Theme.png

Step 9: Pick a theme for your WordPress website.

Thanks to Bluehost's new signup process, users are now immediately presented with a theme picker that includes hundreds of WordPress themes to choose from.

Select a theme that you feel best represents the website you are building. Don't worry if you cannot decide right away. You will always have the option of changing it later.

Step 10: Ready to build.

Let's do this.

11 WP Dashboard.png

Step 11: Welcome to the WordPress Dashboard.

This is a screen that you should get accustomed to seeing often. The WordPress Dashboard is the primary hub of which everything takes place. You will learn more in the next step.

Step 12: Create your content.

From publishing new posts to managing pages, creating content in WordPress is fairly straightforward. But if for whatever reason you find yourself feeling stuck, you can always rely on WordPress' official support page.

12 Launch Site.png

Step 13: Make it official.

Once you're ready for your website to go live, click the magical 'Launch' button in the WordPress Dashboard. You will be prompted to enter a title for your website, as well as a short description.

Follow the simple onscreen instructions, and that's it. Congratulations! Your website is officially live.

Now that your website is live, it's important to remember to stay on top of things. In order for a website to succeed and generate traffic over time, it requires original content on a consistent basis. It also doesn't hurt to spread the word via social media. Tell your friends about what you've been working on.
